Description:Everyone loves Chicken 65.  This deep fried chicken dish is used as a starter, appetizer or as a side dish.  Chicken 65 has its origins in Chennai.  It can be prepared with or without bone.   Presented here for your enjoyment is the recipe of your favourite restaurant Style Chiken 65.

Origin of the Name “Chicken 65”: There are various anecdotes in circulation regarding the origin of the name Chicken 65. Of these, the most convincing one is that the dish was introduced in the year 1965. The founder of the famous Buhari chains of restaurants Mr. AM Buhari had a penchant for naming his dishes after the year of introduction. While most other dishes faded in to oblivion, the finger-licking taste of Chicken 65 made it survive for half a century.

  • Ingredients
  • Ingredients – Malayalam
For marinating
1 Boneless chicken – ½ kg (15-20 – cut into small pieces)
2 Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tea spoon
3 Red chili powder – 2 / 3 tea spoon
4 Coriander powder – 2 tea spoon
5 Pepper powder – ¼ tea spoon
6 Cumin powder – ¼ tea spoon
7 Turmeric powder – 1 pinch
8 Corn flour – 2 tea spoon
9 Rice flour – ¾ tea spoon
10 Red color – (if needed)
11 Egg – 1
12 Lemon juice – 1 table spoon
13 Salt – as needed
Other Ingredients
14 Curry leaves – 1 sprig
15 Green chilies – 1 (sliced into 2)
16 Oil – for deep frying
For Garnishing
17 Onion – few sliced pieces
18 Lemon – ½ of a lemon

  1. Marinate chicken thoroughly for at least 2 hours after mixing with ingredients ‘for marinating’
  2. Heat oil in a kadai and fry out green chillies and curry leaves.
  3. In the same oil deep fry the marinated chicken until golden brown.
  4. Garnish with fried green chillies and curry leaves.
  5. Serve along with sliced onion and lime.

Chef’s Notes:

Marinating is the soul of Chicken 65. Marinating the chicken for atleast 2 hours helps to make it soft. The longer it is marinated, the softer and tastier it will be. Make sure that the ingredients for the marinade are added in the right amounts.
